Who Are We & Why Are We Here?

I don’t know about you but when I look around I see a world filled with questions, yes in different guises and forms, but the overarching theme seems to be ‘Who we are’ and ‘What is our purpose’. The plethora of information out there can, at times, seem totally overwhelming from search platforms such as google to the written word theories and counter theories seem to flow from every corner of our beautiful world.

The world seems to be fixated on identity and meaning to the point of confusion but the wonderful thing about being a christian is the moment you become saved you are part of the family of God. God’s word is clear about who you are and your purpose on earth. So…what does the word of God say?

Lets start with this…Who Does God Say We Are?:

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” 1 Peter 2:9.

This verse is filled with words that describe who we become when we step into Gods light; we have been chosen by God almighty to be called His and no one can change that. Even before the foundations of the world God pre-destined us to be His own, and because of this we must be rooted in the truth about who we are. How amazing is that!?

The bible also speaks about the children of God being a holy nation, set apart, justified through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ. With this comes major responsibility as we are called to live a holy life, one that is counter cultural which essentially means living the Spirit lead way. We are called to live in the world but not be of the world, in all that we do we must go back to the word of God and find out what He says, to seek what is true in His eyes. The more we read, understand and apply the more we become the people God created us to be and the knowledge of who we are becomes even clearer.

It may seem impossible at times because of our flesh but we have the Holy Spirit who is our guide and comforter. When you know who you are no one can tamper with that, no one can take that away from you or say otherwise. As believers we must come to a deeper understanding and knowledge of who God says we are and the greatest revelation we can find this is within the Bible.

And now…What Is Our Purpose?

Going back to 1 Peter 2:9 the tail end of that verse explains very clearly why we are saved. God says that we are created as a holy, righteous nation so that we can proclaim the excellencies of God to the lost.

After becoming saved all I wanted to do was tell people about the one who redeemed me and made me whole. It was like a burning sensation inside my heart because I knew something had changed, changed for the better. That passion we feel for the Lord should be shared with non believers because they are the mission field; we should share through love, compassion and understanding because at one time we were also lost. We must proclaim the word of God, which is the gospel, tell them about Jesus and what He has done, and proclaim them by our works.

The bible says the mark of a true Christian will be seen by their works. So in all things do it from a place of love even if it’s just sharing a snack at school, or letting a colleague at work feel appreciated these are practical things that will set us apart and will leave people wondering why you are they so different which could end up in a conversation about Jesus.

We have opportunities all around us from our neighbours, friends, colleagues, family. It’s so important we pray and ask the Lord, in what way are you calling me to proclaim your excellencies and to whom? The world needs Jesus and at times it’s very difficult to share Him with others because of fear of persecution or just simply of man but at the end of the day perfect love casts out all fear and let us always remember how the grace of God saved us. Wherever you are dear friends don’t miss another opportunity, share His love to those around you, those in your world, even one seed planted out of 100 is enough…just let the Lord your God do the rest :).

Praying you all have an amazingly blessed week and enjoyed this post. We would love to hear how you share the gospel in your daily lives. Please drop leave a comment below and have a blessed day.
